Learning Environment & Situational Factors
1. Specific Context of the Teaching/Learning Situation
Six classes meet five days a week. Each class holds for 50 minutes. The work will take place in secondary school. This course is delivered through a STEM elective. I created this as a unit that will be used throughout all delivered lessons. I plan to execute this unit at the beginning of the course and have Empathy to be in every design challenge for my students. I work in a blended and flipped classroom and I just happen to have a Verizon Innovation Learning Lab to deliver all lessons. I also work in a 1:1 technology school. Technology and networking is not a problem, I am part of a Verizon grant. Each student is given 5GB per month. Digital citizenship is not reinforced once the students are enrolled in middle school. I feel by creating this type of lessons they will have a different understanding of why you must have empathy in a digital world and to truly understand how empathy works in the real world.
2. General Context of the Learning Situation
The expectations for this course is to help create and help with social behavior and creating proper digital etiquette. Creating empathy in the digital world.
3. Nature of the Subject
The nature of this course lesson is a combination of both theoretical and practical. Using the practical method the students are doing the work, learning by participating. Theoretical is the reason why the learning is taking place.
4. Characteristics of the Learners
My students are enrolled in a Title One school and most students are on free or reduced lunch. I have students who are in foster care and are in some very hardship situations. The prior knowledge and experiences that my students deal with are important for the learning situation for this innovative lesson.
5. Characteristics of the Teacher
My belief and values are strong when it comes to helping create empathy in tweens and how they behave in a digital world. I feel that most students do not take their digital footprint seriously. They need the understanding that how you behave will follow you in future endeavors. Students lack empathy! Adults lack empathy! Why not be the educator that starts a real-world disruptive innovation of kindness and taking account of how we treat on another.
